John Ferling’s “fresh, clear-eyed portrait” of the father of our country presents Washington not as a cardboard saint but as a “full-blooded political animal” who sought to accumulate power, deflect blame, and shape how history would view him. “Once in a while” a book revolutionizes our understanding of a figure we thought we knew, said Marie Arana in The Washington Post. ![]()

Let’s take the tetrapods, an animal group comprising amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, all of which are characterized by having four limbs, a backbone and lungs. Moreover, many well-preserved fossils have been found in hot, arid, sparsely populated deserts like the Sahara, indicating that they were once full of water and life.Īnd so, layers of rocks and the fossils they contain can expose the evolutionary development of different species and animal groups because the order of the layers always reflects their age. But fossils have another significance: they help us understand our planet’s past and the creatures that lived a long time ago.Īfter all, sea shells have been found on Mount Everest – evidence that an ocean once existed there – and fossils from warm-adapted animals have been found in the icy Arctic, proof that the region once had a tropical climate. ![]() Fossil fuels are very important for meeting the high energy demand in our modern society. ![]() ![]() ![]() It really added something to the worldbuilding, and these deserts and cities just felt right. It was nice to see a book focused on Djinn written by a Middle-Eastern woman. There are quite a few books set in the Middle East these days, especially A Thousand and One Nights retellings, but few have been written by Middle-Eastern authors. ![]() ![]() This is a story that pulls you into the world and convinces you that you want to stay forever. Loulie doesn’t want to work with djinn killers, but she has no choice otherwise, and soon she finds out that she’s been dragged into something even more dangerous than she’d realised. After she saves the coward younger prince, the Sultan sends her on a mission with the older prince to find a particular magical lamp. With her djinn partner and artefacts, the pair are known for tracking down magical objects and selling them on. Loulie al-Nazari is known as the Midnight Merchant. I can’t wait for my signed edition from Waterstones to arrive, but at least for now, I have this edition to read and hug. I was so lucky to have been an early copy of this book from Nazia at Orbit. It’s a One Thousand and One Nights retelling by a Kuwaiti author, and it’s one that sounded like so much fun. The Stardust Thief is the debut novel by Chelsea Abdullah that comes out this May.
